right theres quite a lot of problems with the network im working on. and im trying to whittle down the problems here is the scenario.

one big subnet (Windows 2003 domain), printers on fixed dhcp, a workgroup of Apples administered by Mr neverseenhim.

Our network is flooded with Boradcast packets. Some were to do with wrong WINS settings, and so have reduced. But there is still lots to do.

1) Printers broadcasting on all protocols, mainly HP but not all, some have old default gateway settings, others no wins settings. i can use jetadmin to disable most settings. But on non-hp printers some only have a default gateway setting not wins, so will these be actaully broadcasting UDP port 137/138. there is so much traffic, and the lack of documentation means i am generally leaving these until last. They are currently set at static on the boxes. Is there anyway to override this through DHCP reservations and force wins settings from there?

2) the apples tend to broadcast their workgroup again through UDP 137/138. i will talk to the apple guy about this but if anyone knows a best method of having apples on the network talking to the domain file servers too please feel free to say.

3)and finally the reason that i first discovered the broadcast issue. Is that, a new server on a new subnet has been installed, i can ping it but i can not see it through network neighbourhood so can not use SAVADmin or backupExec on it. Why is this? i have set the WINS setting to the correct wins server on the main subnet (nothing on its own subnet).

there is so much broadcasts on UDP 138/137. should it not be the case when WINS is installed there should be no such traffic at all?

Sorry i know its a big read and sounds like a bit off a mess so dont blame anyone if they switched off long ago.

but any help would be appreciated.
