Hi,

I hope this is the right place to ask this question... I'm desperate! I just put together a new computer with WinXP Pro installed, but I am having problems networking it with another computer running Win98. We're using the Linksys switched network in a box which worked great when both computers were running Win98.

I have run the XP network setup on both computers, we are both using the same workgroup name, all the clients and protocols are installed and etc. The computer with XP is having no troubles connecting to the web via the hub but is absolutely unable to connect to the other computer in the network. Under the workgroup window both computers are listed, but when I click on the win98 computer, I get an error message telling me that the network path was not found. I've tried pinging that computer from the XP computer-- No response.

On the other hand, the win98 computer is having no trouble reaching the XP computer. It can access the printer hooked up to the XP and can access shared files and gets a ping response and etc.

If the XP comp is having hardware troubles, why is it able to *see* the 98 computer and connect to the internet via the network hub?

I am baffled. I followed all the steps in the XP troubleshooter but it claims to be unable to help me with my problem.

Please help!!!
Thanks

It sounds like everything is set up correctly. Is there any firewall software running on the '98 computer?

You are a genius! His computer is running Norton Internet Security, and when I disabled it, I was able to access his shared files via the network. Excellent. Now I just need to figure out how the hell to configure his NIS to let my computer in!

(Anyone have any suggestions?)

Thanks a bunch!

Great, thank you. He's actually running NIS 2000 and I can't find instructions at symantec as to how to configure for that (although, it's strange-- his firewall wasn't a problem for my old computer on the network), so I think I'll just install NIS 2002 or 03 on his computer instead.

Thanks very much for your help! I've been incredibly frustrated by this!
