I've set up a peer-to-peer netowrk between two computers. One runs XP and the other ME.

I was able to map drives and share a printer but I ran into a problem when trying to open some files or directories.

[thumbsdown] I get an error message indicating that I need access rights to the files.[thumbsdown]

This happens when I'm trying to open files on the XP system from the ME system.

I'm familiar with setting user rights for 2000 and NT. I did not see how to do this with a peer-to-peer in XP or ME. What's strange is that I am able to open some files.

CAN ANYONE HELP?!?!? [thumbsup2] Mahalo,

I had the same problem and tried for weeks to figure it out. In the end I upgrade my ME to XP and now all is well, well there are still some bugs in XP as well.
Try it ou , it should work

If it's XP Pro, disable Simple File Sharing. It doesn't work properly, is a potential security hole, and gives the Admin less control;

Click Start -> My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and un-check Use Simple File Sharing.

Click OK.

Now set the shares and the permissions on those shares in the normal way, and all should be well.

Hope this does the trick! CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

I had the same problem with the same setup and found that once I had set up the ME machine for the internet that solved the problem without having to take Simple File sharing off and still only using sharing at the disc folder level. So its not just a permissions problem; I'd only take off Simple file sharing if you really like mucking around or are a control freak.

To solve the security problem I installed IPX/SPX, because IPX/SPX is a non routable protocol, and then disallowed TCP/IP for file and Pint Sharing. To untick File and Print Sharing in XP go to My Network Properties and in the Menu bar at the top of the window is an Advanced menu item. Select that and you can untick TCP/IP for File and Print Sharing. On the ME machine you just need to untick from within the network properties box.

Yup had the same problem, with XP and 2000 pro

Try this

Go to the 2000 , Machine or ME, 9x whatever

Click on Control Panel
Click on Users
Create the User that you are logging on with on the XP on both machines

eg > User-Administrator , Pass - Password
now both machines must have a user called Administrator with the same password. (basically both OS's have to have the same User on them with the same password.)

*If the machine connects to the Internet EVER, don't have an account called Administrator. Create a new account called MyAdm1n or something with mixed cases and numbers in and disable Administrator. Gives potential hackers one more (fairly large) hurdle into your machine. CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
