I hope someone can help with my networking problem:

Computer 1: Windows ME has a DSL broadband connection that goes into a usb to fast ethernet adaptor (straight into the back of the PC) the PC also has a usb hub that I use to run printers and plug in cameras etc.

Computer 2: Laptop running XP home with a RJ45 socket in the back. I want to connect this to my PC. I plugin a cable into the RJ45 socket with a usb adapter on the end that goes into the hub (mentioned earlier). The connection seems to be fine from the laptop saying it's using a 1394 net adaptor

I'm having a few problems with both machines connecting though. Both workgroups have the same name MSHOME and unique computer names. I'm wondering if it's the RJ45 to usb hub situation? Any ideas?

I'd say you should get yourself a cable/dsl router/switch. Example: Linksys Instant Broadband Etherfast Cable/DSL Router with a built in 4 port 10/100 switch or a wireless router etc. It would allow you to connect both PCs to the internet easily and network the PCs. Then both PCs can take advantage of the printers on the USB hub by sharing them.

Are you using a cross-over cable to connect the two machines or just a normal straight through?

Also give each machine a IP address & subnet mask on each machine. i.e.
192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0

Thanks guys. The cable is RJ45 (male) into laptop to RJ45 (female) into adaptor that turns into a USB (male) that in-turn goes into the hub.

Sorry that's wrong it's:
