I have a windows2000 laptop currently connected via a reversed network lead to a PC using netbeui, I'm about to replace the laptop with an XP OS - will I still be able to link to the PC using Netbeui?

Yes, Netbui is included on the XP distribution disk. You really should not need Netbui in your setting, but it will certainly work. Please see Scott Finney's suggestions for using Netbui with XP, including a good suggestion to use the Win2k Netbui stacks:
