Network won't work after power failure

I have two computers that were networked together. The host machine runs XP, and the other is 98. Yesterday, we had a power failure. I should also mention that the cable guy was here at the time in install a cable modem, but he had not done anything with the computers at the point the power went out. He installed the modem, and when the power came back on, he tested it and it was fine.

I tried to re-establish the network with out success. On the 98 machine, I tried to run the network troubleshooter, and just got a blank window. It got to the point where it gives you a list of problems, you check one, and it troubleshoots. When I hit "Next", the frame where the results should be is blank.

Does anyone have any suggestions? (OK, besides getting a battery backup.)

How are the two machines networked together? Crossover cable, switch (hub), via a router etc, or what?

What caused the power failure? If it was a close lightning strike for example, then it could be one or both of your NICs have been zapped. Also, the '98 installation might have been damaged by being instantly powered off, rather than closed down in a controlled manner.

Are you in a position to hook up the XP machine to the Internet, to at least establish if its network connection is working?

Run scandisk on the '98 machine. Try a different NIC in the '98 machine. Then you could try uninstalling all network protocols, remove the card, reboot machine so it knows it's got no network stuff. Switch off, reinsert card, run up Windows and reinstall network protocols, drivers etc.

Thanks for your response. I have a hub. As it turned out, it was a matter of the computers looking for the wrong IP address. BTW, the power failure was a result of a car accident on the turnpike, which runs right behind our building. The networking is working OK now, but I still cannot access the internet from my other computer. However, that is a minor issue at this point.

Glad to hear your network is ok now.

I presume it's the XP machine that won't talk to the Internet? Probably your cable modem sorts out DNS's etc., so make sure Gateway and DNS have the IP Address of the cable modem shown against them. If you have a software firewall installed other than the built-in XP one (Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm etc), then you may need to "enable" a connection out to the Internet.
