need of some help, we have a few network printers through out the office either HP4350N's or HP4100N's all were assigned ip's all were given names to help define what area of the butilding they were in. i am trying to put together a script that automatically adds printers to the computers, but have not been able to get it to work correctly. below is the exact script in am trying to run, and it looks like it is working but then i get the error that follows

script:
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in /n \\192.168.168.50\HP4350_Office

error:
windows cannot connect to the printer. either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost connection to the server.

can anyone help? what am i missing?

I just run your script on my machine as got the sam error, so its a generic error, not specific to you..

have the users got the right to add printers ?

strang IP ?? 168.168? you sure thats right?

could you manually install that printer if you were at a scripted PC ? just to check, then delete it and try your script again

i am testing the scripts on my machine (admin rights across the board)

currently what i do to install the printer on the pc's is, install them as local printers, then change the port to the ip address, yeah its the correct address, but we have such a turn around going on right now, the less i have to do at their machine and the more i can take care of throught scripts and AD the better..........

and no the printer does not show up on the domain, i have put the domain setup in the printer config, no response though, when i try and search for the printer using the DC it can not be located

if you have to manually install the drivers and then add the IP, surley thats the problem, as a new user hits that IP and then has not got the driver so would error?
unless its a print server?

if you add a local printer as local admin on client PCs then add IP as a port, they will appear for all new users on that PC..how many clients?

In order to make the printer show up in AD where you can search for it, you need to check off list in the directory under the share tab. I'm not sure if that is really what your problem is but just in case.

currently step by step:

i have the drivers saved on a shared drive,
i install them on the local machine (local admin),
i install the printer as a lpt1 printer,
i go into the port settings and change it to look at the network port.

each of the printers has its own network print server that came with it from HP

Why not install the printers on the server and share them out. Right click on the printer and select connect and your done. You could even print up a quick instruction sheeto for the users to do this themselfs.

Try finding a script that installs it from the server rather than locally.

didnt think about that, thankx, i got the win 2003 drivers, installed the printers on the server and off i went.
as far as the script all i had to do was point it at the server and not directly at the ip of the printer.

thank you for your assistance
