WE ARE BACKING UP OUR SERVER ON A SEAGATE TAPE BACKUP THAT IS INSTALLED ON A WORK STATION. THE SERVER IS A NT4 WITH SERVICE PACK 4. THE WORKSTATION IS WINDOWS 98. THE BACK UP ALWAYS STARTS CORRECTLY BUT AFTER ABOUT 1 GIG THE SERVER FREEZES. WE GET THE MESSAGE PATH CAN NOT BE FOUND. THE SERVER THEN NEEDS TO BE SHOUT OFF AND RESTARTED. THIS BACKUP IS DONE AT NIGHT WHEN THEIR IS NO NETWORK TRAFFIC. THIS SERVER PROBABLY FREEZES DURING THE DAY ABOUT TWICE A WEEK. WE ARE BACKING UP ABOUT 7 GIG. THE BACK UP AND TAPES ARE 10/20 GIG. ANY IDEAS.

You might want to make sure that the backup software user, has rights to the data that you are trying to back up.

HI.

This is not a good backup method.

You can try alternate backup techniques that can mirror the data from server to workstation, like:

* robocopy from the NT resource kit.

* Rapid Backup:

* My modest MM utility:

* Or one of many other synchronazation tools.

BUT ANYWAY YOU MUST FIX THE PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE THE SERVER TO HANG AND BETTER INSTALL A TAPE LOCALY ON THE SERVER.
How do you plan to backup the server registry?

The best final solution is IMHO:
1) Fixing the problems of the server (Check event logs for hints).
2) Installing local tape backup drive and software.
3) Synchronasing data files to a local hard disk on workstation as an *additional* backup.
