Our win98 clients are unable to connect to our unix server via samba. The same users are able to connect from a NT workstation. We are able to ping the server by name or address w/o problems. Cannot connect via \\ipaddress\sharename either. I have seen a lot of posts on google groups but no resolution. Any suggestions would be appreciated if you have seen or are having the same issues.

I think you may need to EnablePlainTextPasswords

look on the 98 CDROM here
\tools\reskit\help\rk98book.chm
and search the book
-----------------------------------------
from the book under Chapter 17
"Windows 98 on Third-Party Networks"
in this section;
"Troubleshooting Windows 98 on Third-Party Networks"
way down at the bottom of page
--------------------------------
Samba server does not accept your password.
For security reasons, Windows 98 no longer allows you to send plain text passwords. It sends only encrypted passwords. However, Samba servers require plain text passwords, so you will not be able to connect to Samba servers unless you change a registry entry to enable plain text passwords.

Caution

Enabling plain text passwords will decrease your computer’s security.

To enable plain-text passwords, add the registry entry EnablePlainTextPassword (as a Dword) and set the value to 1 in the following registry location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Vnetsup

------------------------------------------

more;

also look into DFS with 98
also pay attention to the "SECURITY" problem in enabling plain text passwords....

Dunno how to necessarily make SECURE all the boxes involved
