Network Error: Connection reset by peer 1

I have two PCs on a network with a hub and a router. One PC runs Win98 the other Windows Me. I access the net through Blueyonder broadband. On both PCs I have Norton Utlities 2000 and Firewall enabled.

I'm having problems accessing the search results page on a website -

I use a login and password to search their database. I can login fine but when I search their database I get the following:

- Using Internet Explorer: The page cannot be displayed

- Using Netscape Communicator: A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data (Network Error: Connection reset by peer). Try connecting again.

I have contacted the site and they say they have no technical issues.
Blueyonder currently have no outages in my area.
I have pinged the site and there are no problems.
I have defragmented both hard drives.
I have run Norton on both hard drives.
I have 128-bit connection security.
I have switched off Firewall but no joy.
I get no error messages on booting up either PC.
I have no file sharing access problems between the PCs.
I have adjusted my browsers to increase download speed.
I have stood on my head and chanted.
Nothing seems to work.

Can anyone help? Or explain what the error message coming up in Netscape means exactly?

Aha! I just tried to preview this post and I got the same error message (using Netscape).

Just off the top of my head sounds like you might have a corrypt file that is causing your problems go to internet options in the control panal when you bring it up right on the front page in second block ,Temp Internet Files , Click on the deleate Files& delate Cookies. and see if that may not be your problem

Sorry, I forgot to mention I deleted all temp files, cookies and the recycle bin as well. So no joy there.

However... I have just went into control panel, internet options, connections, LAN settings. The existing properties clicked were Auto detect settings. I left this on but have now also clicked on detect proxy server. I can now access the search results page.

I checked the connections on the other PC and it doesn't have this proxy server thing ticked. Is it okay for me to have done this on my PC or have I started on yet another downward spiral into the pit of pc hell?

It will not hurt to try anything just remember what you did and only do one at a time so if something is wrong you can undo . In my opinion the best way to learn is do it , ask my wife how many times I have crashed my PC, Let me look around some and see if I can find anything to help you

A friend of mine is having a slightly similar problem. Did your proxy detection setting fix things?

Not really, the problem just became intermittent so I reverted back to my original settings and it has now disappeared. I have lots of bits all connected with spaghetti so I can't tell you how I solved it or if it was just a blip. But I sympathise...
