How do I give a user access to a network drive in Small Business Server 2003? I have tried adding his name to the permissions list, but no joy. Do I need to do something from his machine?
I am assuming that when he trying to map the share he gets access denied, or when he tries to access something on the share he gets access denied? If this is the case you not only have to set the NTFS permissions on the drive but you have to set the permissions on the share. when a new share is created in 2003 it's default share permissions are Everyone:Read Only.
Right click the share in Explorer -> Properties -> Sharing Tab -> Permissions Button -> Set your permissions.
i have not even set the server up yet. i knew about the sharing and security stuff. i was wondering if sbs could serve simply as a workgroup member/file server and not an A.D.D.C.
This is why think I might be missing a step out somewhere. The drive isn't actually showing up on his "My Computer" window. He's definitely on the network, because he's able to access files on other machines etc.
When you go to Tools > Map Network Drive, and you put the path to the shared resource (such as //computer/sharename),
what happens? Does it give access denied?
Got it working, at last. I'm rather embarassed to admit to the mistake I made, but I ought to in case it's useful to anyone else reading this thread. Just after I posted my last reply I realised I hadn't asked the user to log out and in again. Once he'd done this it worked fine.
