I'm running Win XP Home. When I enable the LAN connection on my computer, it always thinks it’s "acquiring network connection," even after it’s connected. I.e. the little moving ball never goes away. This is a recent problem - it came up after I had my hard disk replaced. I can manually fix this by going to Network Connections and hitting F5 (refresh). I understand this is an XP bug, and would like to find a permanent fix. I find it helpful to have the icon show the status correctly, and a nuisance to have to manually update it.

Have you tried not displaying any icon via the Properties of the LAN Adapter, just for a couple of minutes, then changing the setting back to show the Connection icon?

Is this bug the same for all your users, or only you?

Do you see it in "Safe Mode with Networking"?

What service pack are you using for XP? Have you updated your adapters driver lately?

Linney, thanks for your suggestions. I tried the 1st idea, without success. I'm the only one on the network - the network is just my computer and the DSL modem. I have not tried the other ideas yet, but I will.

Archwayguy, I'm on ver 5.1, SP3. I have not updated any drivers lately - it was working fine with the current drivers a week ago. Are you thinking maybe the LAN adapter driver got corrupted?

What are the physical connections like (hardware) and any cabling between machine and modems/routers, perhaps something is loose or faulty?

There's just a short ethernet cable from the modem to the computer. The computer works completely fine on the Internet - the connection icon just doesn't keep itself updated.

I downloaded and installed the latest network adapter driver from Intel, then did a cold boot. Icon still flaky.

I see this in occasions when using my laptop via my home Wireless connection (which can be flaky at times due to the need for a new wireless router). Sometimes it even reports as disconnected yet the connection still works.

Not found a "fix" yet but it 'aint broke so I ignore it.

You never said whether you had the same behavior in "Safe Mode with Networking"?

I am having the same issue in XP Pro.
Does any one know a solution for this?
is this a bug in winXP Pro SP3 update?
Ever since SP3 got into my PC I am seeing this issue.

Thanks

You can have a read of this and see what you think. Create a System Restore point and give the included fix a try if you like.

Device Manager may not show any devices and Network Connections may not show any network connections after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

There have been lots of reports with SP3 involving Networking as some of these Google links highlight.

If it bothers you too much then you do have the option to remove SP3 or wait for Microsoft to get around to fixing them.
