Network card knocked out when PC Hibernates

Hi All:

happy new year ! wish all your all wishes come true !

got one question see if anybody have seen the same:

I have a Toshiba laptop PC, one of those came with built in NIC (Realtek 10/100), it is running Windows XP pro sp1
it works great except every time I have it to hibernate (so I don't have to re open all the program/document next time I turn on the PC and its faster) the network card stop working, thus the boradband and LAN connection is down, the problem is resovled after I reboot the computer, but reappear again when I hibernates it again.


I have tried to install another PCMCIA card NIC, but the two NIC wouldn't co-exist, even if I uninstall the built-in NIC, the driver would reappear and knock the new PCMCIA off (with an error "can't start device, code 10)

has anybody seen this issue on a toshiba or any other laptop running windows xp ?

I had the same issue and all I had to do was disable the Network Card and then enable it.

Use this driver:

Be sure the Power Management feature is configured properly.

Enter the following into a notepad session, and name the file fix_adapter.cmd:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

comtec17, I sometimes used toshiba config-free software to disable and re enable, but it doesn't work anymore, it took a long time spend mess around with it, I would just reboot and get it working

I saw an option in the power management today, it says "allow windows to shutdown the device in the stand by mode" should I disable that ?

I have a Toshiba with a similar issue. I updated the nic drivers and it helped. But then I created a small lan at the house. Similar problem occurs now if I don't have the network cable attached. Think it might have something to do with the shared interrupts. Sometimes I can logoff and then log back on and it works, other times I have to shutdown/restart. In your case, try updating the drivers and see if it works for you.

i have upgraded the driver, it still doesn't work

i have missed including a piece of info, I also have Cisco VPN adapter (software-based) installed, will this cause the problem ?

Now that is an interesting question. I have two vpn clients loaded on my machine to connect to different corporate networks. Not really willing to test anymore on this machine since I got both vpn clients to a point where they are working now. What I do notice is that if the pc wakes up and the vpn was active. I have to exit the vpn client, restart whatever network connection I was using, (dial up, dsl) then restart the vpn client. If you use the Toshiba hardware wizard, does it allow you to disable the internal card? Sometimes the Toshibas require you to use their hardware wizard instead of the windows wizard. If all else fails, take a peek over at the Toshiba forums on Compuserve. Looks like they changed the link again. The one I saved doesn't work.

as soon as I reboot, both of them would work, but as soon as if I close my laptop lid (so it goes to hibernated mode), the internet wouldn;t work, thus the VPN


yes, in the config-free uiltity of toshiba, it let you disable/enable the two device (the realtek NIC and Csico VPN), sometimes if I mess around and got lucky it can get the internet to work again after PC resume from the hiberated mode

can you point to me which specific ones you were looking at ?

one positive side of this problem is, I regularly use this laptop to read books and do something that is good for my future (offline) so if it is not able to connected to the internet it takes away the distraction to look at other stuff

Yep, that's the forum. It sure looks different now! I would do a search on realtek, sleep, hibernate, etc over there and see what you can dig up. It was a while back that I went in over there. The problem that you're describing sure seems similar to mine and it might have to do with the routing metrics after the pc resumes. You can try this command from a dos window and see if makes a difference when you resume. ipconfig /renew This renews the assigned ip address to your pc and should also update the gw/dns info on the pc. Then see if the vpn client will work. Otherwise, I think you will have to follow the same steps I described above. (ie.-Reconnect to ISP, exit VPN client. Start VPN client. Reconnect to VPN.) You may also want to compare the before sleep and after sleep ip with this command. ipconfig or ipconfig /all
