Hi.

We have small but expanding network at our offices and as we are expanding with have changed the IP addresses of all machines from the 192.168.0.x range to the 10.x.x.x range with a netmask of 255.0.0.0. Everyone on the network is working fine apart from the Network Places browse function. When you try and view the content of the domain you get the following error:

"DomainName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently avaiable."

The domain controller is a W2k server and until we changed the IP addresses it functioned fine. You can still access other machines on the networking by typing \\machinename and you can access the servers shares like this as well. If you try to browse the network from the server itself you get a different error message:

"DomainName is not found. The network path was not found."

I have check and double checked that the IP addresses have been changed everywhere I can think of, including in the DNS server.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks.

Andrew.

This could be a permissions problem rather than a network configuration issue. Do you have any group policys in place that deny clients access to anything associated with networked areas?

Not that I'm aware of, but there could be, how do I check?

Andrew.

I'm sure you would be aware you did have as you would have added them in using the Group Policy editor within Active Directory. Right click on your domain in Active Directory and select properties. On the group policy tab you will see anything you have added in.

I think from your response though that is more likely to be a permissions problem.

The only one in the list is 'Default Domain Policy' which we have never touched.

Why would change the IP addresses of the machine cause a permissions problem?

Andrew.

Do you have WINS running?

I had this issue last month. I tracked the problem to a single DC. demoted it and promoted it. problem fixxed.

No, we don't have WINS running, but we never have had. We only have a single domain controller, how do I demote and promote it?

Thanks

Andrew.

well I'd try installing WINS first just to see. I guess if you never had it you don't have any 98 or NT4 clients.

Demotion and Premotion requires you to temporarily setup a new DC and transfer roles to it.
