Had a really had time trying to figure out where to post this, especially as I am using XP Home, but likely this isn't material. If it needs to be in some other forum, the moderator can move it.

Have just acquired a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop from a graduating university student and the computer has a configuration that I do not recognize. Network Connections has a portion entitled: "Network Bridge"and shows three items underneath:

1) [Name] Network Bridge (Network Bridge), [Type]: Network Bridge, [Status]: Connected, [Device]: Mac Bridge Miniport

2) 1394 Connection, Network Bridge Connected, Bridged 1394 Net Adapter

3) Local Area Connection Network Bridge Connected, Bridged Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection

The computer is terribly slow booting up and has periods where it becomes unresponsive (seems to be doing something). I am wondering if this "bridge" has something or everything to do with it because this machine should be reasonably fast?

What is this Network Bridge? Do I need it? If not, what is the best procedure to remove it and to create a more normal network connection

he bridged (routed) firewire to ethernet.

right click lan-connection, choose properties.
for a lan you only need

client for microsoft network
file and print sharing
Qos (not really needed, but there by default, just unhook it)
tcp-ip

just uninsall the rest (highlight and choose uninstall)

Thanks, Is this likely the reason that the computer seems to have slow periods and bootup, or is that probably for other reasons?

Out of curiosity, why would the firewire be bridged to the router?

chances are high that it is, but i cant tell for sure.

here you misunderstood my post, a networbridge is a software that routes between networks on multihomed pc´s (means pc´s with at least two networks connected to two networkcards).

so he bridged the eternet-connection to the firewire on that pc, most probably he had a pc with ethernet-connection/internet and firewire onboard and connected his mac over firewire to be able to access the internet trough the ethernet-connection, but thats just a guess

Or he had a Video Source hooked up to the FireWire and was streaming this over the ethernet, e.g. Cams, video grabber, etc. ...

now slow boot times can be caused through myriad things, ranging from Services, Network Drives, to not enough RAM and damaged/corrupt HDDs...
