Network and dial up connections folder empty !

Somewhere along the line the contents of my Network and dial-up folder disappeared.

start -> settings -> network and dial-up connections -> empty

Similarly, the folder comes up through the control panel, but with absolutely nothing in it.

I am running two Win2000Pro installations with an ADSL connection via a Nokia m1122 full rate ethernet router with a 4 Port Hub.

For the present, all still works fine, but I sure would like to see the folder contents in case I need to manage them.

Any ideas on how to recover them?

Hello,

Have you recently added a new user to your system? The contents of mine disappeared (when logged on as the Administrator) when I added a personal account for my own use to my Win2K system but reappeared under my own.

No explanation as to why, and it still worked fine whoever I was logged in as.
I think its just one of those things.

No, in fact I have not recently added a new user. I tried setting up some new accounts with various levels of user privileges, but I'm still not seeing anything.

Obviously,this is one of the great mysteries of our times.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Recently had the same problem you seem to be experiencing.

Thanks for the pointer. It looks like a great checklist.

I found my registry to be corrupt in a number places, so I sat down and spent three full days carefully rebuilding it (I had little idea of what I was doing when I started).

What an education.

If you are still watching this thread... I am having the same empty-network-connections-folder problem and probably a corrupted registry too. The steps pointed out by Mike didn't seem to fix the problem.

Could you please tell me how you educated yourself in rebuilding the registry? I've read several basic tutorials, but they are too simple and don't deal with problem solving.

I can't speak to the rebuilding of the registry but the root cause in my case was that the "Network Connections" service had stopped starting on boot-up, for some unknown reason. Once started manually the icons reappeared immediately and it continued to restart on boot-up.

If you have good separation of data and OS it may be worth while just rebuilding your system rather than poking around in the registry (from a time consuming point of view).

Its a bit of a cop-out but hey - its Windows!
