Netware NAT and DHCP

I've done NAT with *nix flavors in the past but as I'm becoming more and more familiar with Netware, I wanted to give it a shot at home. I know that Netware has NAT capabilities built in. I also know that you don't want your server's IP to be dynamic. Can I have one NIC as a DHCP client from my ISP and the second NIC with a private IP (192.168.1.1) as the server's IP address and gateway for the client workstations?

There is an NLM that you can run that will configure the NIC to do DHCP. I can't remember when they started shipping it, i think it was with one of the service packs. You could also download it.

Look for DHCPCLNT.NLM, I think that is the name. When I tried to use it for the same thing, I had mixed results. Lots of abends. Not sure if they've made it more stable. I also found that the commands were confusing and not documented very well.

One problem you will run into is that some netware services dont' like the fact that the IP address may change. Again, I can't remember the specifics, but some things rely on a static address. It seems that NAT and the public/private interface assignment might be one of them.

One thing you may be able to do, assuming you're using Cablemodem.. is if your IP address doesn't change that often, grab the IP address with the DHCP client, then statically assign it. Use it that way till it changes (Which could be several months), then change it if things stop working.

As far as NAT in general, it works very well on Novell.

I have used the DHCPCLNT.NLM using a cable modem. The issue is that you bind all of the services to the internal card (this one will never change, so the services will not be impacted) The use the DHCP client on the external card..works VERY well. Only thing that doesn't seem to function is VPN software that requires IPSEC, ie Nortel
