Hi,
In upgrading a server from 4.11 to 6.5 I encountered a problem with Vol1 and Vol2. The Sys volume is ok. The rights on Vol1 and Vol2 files and folders are incorrect, for some reason. I had to restart the upgrade twice and that might have caused the problem. Again the Sys volume looks correct and everything including all rights are ok.

My question is: If I recopy my 4.11 vol1 and vol2 using Portlock Storage Manager, which preserves all rights, and place it in the new server, 6.5, will that work ok. Will the rights stay the way they are in 4.11? All drives are the traditional format.

Is Sys the only volume changed during an upgrade? Or, does something change, like formatting, on all volumes during an upgrade?

Thanks.

When you updated your DS on the 4.11 servers to DS v6.21, you should have reloaded DS and it would generate SUIDs. These are required for a successful transfer of the trustee assignments.. Did you go through this process?

Also, it's good to use a program like TRUSTEE.NLM to make a backup copy of the trustees taht you can restore later if it fails during the normal process of the migration.

Thanks Marv,
No I did not. DS v6.21 was part of the SP9, I thought. I did not do reloading DS to the other 4 servers that are doing fine.
This one is a secondary server, holding a replica of the NDS, I think. I was upgrading it along with the server holding the primary NDS, which is fine. And the problem server's SYS volume is ok as well. These 2 servers are parallel in the same tree. I think the problem happened when the first upgrade failed twice I tried a third time with the primary server on line and it succeeded.
My 4.11 servers are intact and still running as I try to get the 6.5s up to speed.
Should I run the TRUSTEE.NLM on the 4.11 server volumes and then restore the results to the 6.5 server volumes? Would that work?
I think see how TRUSTEE.NLM works, but have never used it.

Thanks for your help.

I don't believe that DS6.21 is part of SP9..

You can see which DS version you have in your tree by going into DSREPAIR --> Time Syncronization. It will list all the servers and what DS version they are on. If the NW4.x servers are not at 6.21, you need to update them first.

The NW6.5 Install CD has the NetWare Deployment Manager that you run from your Windows system. I can't remember for certain, but I think you can update DS on your NW4.11 servers from there also.

After you update it, either reboot the server or unload and reload NDS to properly generate the SUIDs.

Trustee.nlm just scans your volumes and logs all the trustees. After the migration, if they don't get restored correctly, you can use Trustees.NLM to put them back in place onto the NW6.5 volumes.
