Running into problems with the upgrade. Trying to add NW 6 into a 4.1 tree. (New server will eventually replace the old when upgrade is complete) Can't find an old copy of NICI 1.5.1 to run on NW4. Can anyone help me out?
While it's been a couple of years since I have done anything with 4.11, I don't recall that it needs or uses NICI. I don't even have a 4 box left to check.
When we upgraded to 5 and again to 6, our biggest concern was the schema. What Novell consulting had us do was bring the new server up in a separate tree, import the schema from that new tree remotely, remove NDS from the new server and then integrate it into the production tree. It worked a treat. No problems, other than some anticipated communication and sync issues. You have to watch your directory and use DSREPAIR a lot with the 2 different DS versions.
Bring the 6 server on line, give it a replica of <ROOT>, let it sync over the weekend, then promote it to MASTER. That seems to help a lot.
Also, fully patch the both the 4.11 and 6 boxes with the most recent SP and any other DS patches.
Thanks Beaghler. I will try that. This upgrade has been a nightmare. Have reinstalled 6 several times now - can't get iManage to run, can't get license installed...the list goes on and on. NW4 Sp9 - current config - running Zen 1.1.
Plan was to get NW6 server up and running - Zen 4 - install new software (Office, etc) then create new user accounts and copy over the home dirs. Then dump the old server. Oh yeah - workstations going from NT 4 to Win 2000. User gets new workstation along with new login.
But...NWAdmin32 on old NW4 doesn't work right anymore, also errors when installing print servers - all since the updates to NW 4 to prep for 6. ConsoleOne sort of works, but hoses up everything else on the workstation.
Download NWAdmin v. 5.19f from support.novell.com, install it into your local hard drive, it will run much faster and your problem should also go away. It is only the core files so you should first break out the old 4.11 CD and copy the NWAdmin file from there first, then copy the SP9 NW admin files, then copy the 5.19f files on top of it all. This will give you the current stable version of NWAdmin for 4.11. And this will be for the NWAdmin that lives in the SYSUBLIC\WIN32 directory, not WIN95 or WINNT.
NICI (Novell International Cryptography Infostructure) is NetWare 5.x and up, 4.11 knows nothing about NICI and doesn't need it.
Since you won't be doing an actual migration (which would be a pian in the pinky), be sure you use the Consolodation Wizard to move the files between the servers. So long as they are in the same tree (Novell's next version will be able to copy between two trees), you will retain all user trustee assignments. Just to be on the safe side, be sure you backup your files and use a trustee backup utility (there are both DOS and NLM version offered by Novell).
If both your 4.11 server and ther 6.0 server (oh yea, and also use the SP2 overlay CD for your OS install), try to keep them from sharing a replica. They don't play well with each other. This is because 4.11 does not understand auxliery class atributes in the 8.6.2 schema (what Beaghler was saying). If you are single server shop, this may be hard to avoid, but do try.
