I've starting having problems with file folder permisions on a Netware 4.11 server volume. I have a folder set with RF for everyone and selected subfolders with full access.

When a user creaded a folder and file in a folder they are authorized to use, they can't delete / change the file or folder. They get an error that the disk is right protected, or they or someone else has the file or folder open and is being used. I can see that nobody has the file grabbed.

Any ideas to point me in the right direction. updated clients to 4.90.0.0 SP1a and turned off file caching

I had a similar problem and i filed it in work so Ill get back to you tomorrow.

... Full access .."?

If by any chance you are using a Microsoft access controls, there could be a reason for

".. They get an error that the disk is right protected, or they or someone else has the file or folder open and is being used. I can see that nobody has the file grabbed."...

In such a case, according to the Microsoft access control, the "grabber" could be the NW 411. PArticularly if the client is an W2K or XP which have their own appraoaches. (W98 is safe this way).

So my suggestion (assuming you are using MS access control screens), is to use NetAdmin (a DOS based utility that gets automaticaaly loaded onto the path after signing on as the administrator) to manage the rights.

End

NWAdmin (NetWare Administrator) does the job just fine, there is no need to revert to the DOS equivalent?

How are you applying your rights? Are the rights assigned to groups with users as members of the groups?

cbailey, Lets just check that you are using a Novell Network Only, or is at a mixture with Windows or Linux or ?

Presuming it is just a Novell Network:

1) you have assigned "F" & "R" file rights so people can See and read documents/folders.

2)I also presume you have assigned "C" (create) but have ou assigned any other rights to that specific folder? REmember that file rights will flow through from the top down, unless you specify specific folders to a group or single user.

Here is just to recap the file rights

S = Supervisor = all rights to files & Sub dirs
R = Read = Open and read files, and open, read, and
execute applications
W = Write = Open & change contents of files
C = Create = Create subdirectories and files
E = Erase = Delete file/dir and sub dirs
M = Modify = Change attrbs or name of file\dir
F= Filescan = able to see dirs and files
A = Access Control = Change trustee assignments and
Inherited Rights Fileter (IRf that is automatically
assigned to sub folders and users etc) so that all rights except Supervisor are given.

Check the folder by looking at the properties of IRF (right click folder select IRF) and it will show you what users have rights etc.

let me know how you get on

Here is an example of how I created part of my network:

1) main folders/shared drive common to everyone and allows users to do anything they wish = all rights except supervisor

2) sub folder in the same shared drive that everyone bar me can only read = R & F file rights,,, just as you have assigned

My supervisor pointed out that there is an issue with Microsoft XP OS. Microsoft seems to know about this but it's one of those "contact us directly for the hot fix". I need to check and make sure the affected workstations are all patched up.

I'll let you guys know, how this works out.

Thanks for the help so far

NetAdmin .v. NwAdmin.

I thought NwAdmin requires Novell client which Chailey was less likely to have installed since they might be managing with Windoze client logon.

End.
