Netware 4.11 for SB install error

Hi all. I'm trying to install Netware 4.11 for Small Businesses but running into the following error:

Abend: Page Fault Processor
Exception (Error code 00000002)
OS version: Novell Netware 4.11

Initialization process

The CPU encountered a problem executing code in SERVER.NLM.
The problem may be in that module or in the data passed
to that by another NLM.

Hardware: Intel 166Mhz
64Mb RAM
4.3Gb Seagate HD

Start off by bumping up the ram in your system. Your at just enough ram for a 4gig volume, but have nothing for system, so your resources are low, and your server will be prone to abends.

The abend you are getting points to hardware. If added memory does not help, try to replace the CPU and run some diags on the system to test MB.

If you can't get additional RAM for the system (128 would be fine), you can try decreasing the size of the volume on the driver to about 2 or 2.5 gigs.

Provo, Page Fault ..... is a Hardware Abend?

I have never seen a Page Fault Abend turn out to be hardware related....driver yes, but Page Fault?

I could be wrong, but have never seen it.

Processor Exception = Any error detected by the CPU

Page Fault = In NetWare 4.x servers, memory paging is enabled. If an invalid address is used by any Novell or third-party software module, a Processor Exception is generated by the CPU. Because NetWare uses the CPU's memory paging and mapping facilities, invalid addresses include any address that is either protected or outside the module's registered address space.


The CPU is detecting an error in memory. The Intel Pentium line had issues, not only with calculations, but with memory addressing also. If your system is fully patched and not running anything or you just doing an install, most of the time this issue can be resolved by replacing the CPU, other cases get fixed by replacing the memory stick. A few cases have been resolved by using a different install media because something just isn't right on the media being used.

Yes, I have seen this error related to hardware - bad memory once and once a bad port on a hub, of all things.
But by the time I figured that out I had already changed the NIC and drivers, so it could have been the driver I suppose.

Thanks for all the help. Actually, after last night, I made some progress. I reformatted the drive (Seagate 4.3Gb IDE), did a new install. It copied all the files but after getting to the "Installing Netware 4.11 for Small Business...Please wait" screen, it just hanged. I might just try another new install again. Any other suggestions?
