We have some users in a remote office in the middle east who are connected to our main office in London via VPN through a Netscreen 5. They say that about once per week they have to restart it because they cannot send or receive e-mails etc. We don't know if this is a VPN issue or an issue with the entire netscreen because they've never tried access the internet when this happens. The firmware version is 5.1.0r3.0 and basically what I want to know is if anybody knows of any issues with this release?

I Don't use that version, but it may be worth upgrading it..
What do the logs say, if it is just the vpn then it may be a difference in re-negotiation times. Can you still connect to the netscreen when they claim its failing?

The logs don't say anything. My manager has come up with a theory that the connection is just getting congested (and that they haven't actually even TRIED accessing the internet when this happened). And then obviously when they restart the netscreen all the connections are lost so it's like starting with a clean slate. They've never told us on time for us to try to connect, by the time they tell us they've already rebooted it !!

Anyway, I mainly wanted to find out if there were any known issues with this version. But we've got other NetScreen's with the same version running and no problems at all. So I think maybe my manager is right ... what d'ya think?

I would look at the home page on the web ui to see if any of the devices resources are getting filled up (like memory). We have a zillion 5 GT's deployed, and if we had to restart one every week we would send it back to Juniper!
