I am being pressured by a vendor to configure remote desktop sharing on a server (win2k sp4) so they can troubleshoot their application remotely. I would prefer them to use terminal server via a secure VPN that we would set up.
I need valid security reasons why NOT to go with remote desktop sharing. Can anyone help??
Thanks!

I think you could get the best of both worlds here. have the vendor connect via a VPN and send them an invitation to provide Remote Assistance instead of a Remote Desktop connection. That way you can monitor what they are doing while they are working on your system.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

From what I have read, Remote Assistance requires XP instead of 2000, so that would not work in this case. Thanks

Sorry, forgot which forum I was in, thought you had 2003. You are correct that Remote Assistance is not available for 2000.

You could also go with the VPN and use RealVNC to let them remote control the console. That would give you an extra layer of security because you could simply disable the VNC service when you did not want the vendor being able to access the system.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.
