I used NetMeeting's remote desktop sharing in Win2k without any problem. Now, I upgraded my PC to XP Pro. NetMeeting still work but there is an annoyance issue. The control of the remote PC (mouse and keyboard) pauses for a few seconds (about 4/5 seconds) at every 20 seconds of usage. So, I used NetMeeting for 20 seconds or so, then all the control would be paused for about 5 seconds. Then everything worked again for another 20 seconds, and the whole thing cycles.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

How does it behave if you set the Compatibility Mode for NetMeeting to 2000?

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I could not find the compactibility option in the NetMeeting pull down menu. Can you tell me where and how to set the compactibility mode to 2000 instead of XP Pro.

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

It will have to be set via the properties of the NetMeeting program (.exe). I think it is called Conf.exe and found in C:\Program Files\NetMeeting.

Type - Getting older programs to run on Windows XP - in the Help and Support program for the basics.

How to Use Windows Application Compatibility Mode.

Thanks for the instruction, I will give it a try.

Hi,

I tried it but didn't work because XP Pro didn't allow me to change the compactibility mode. It said that NetMeeting is part of the XP, so it cannot be changed.

Any other idea ??

Most of the Known issues with NetMeeting are covered in the ReadMe file (netmeet.htm) accessed via Help in NetMeeting.

Have you tried Windows Messenger or just ordinary Remote Assistance to see if you have the same problems?

It is logical to assume that the computer you are accessing remotely may have problems that end. Are you able to try it with another friend?

I tried using other PC in the lab to NetMeeting (remote Desktop sharing) back to my office PC, no problem at all. All the lab PCs are XP Pro.

The problem only occurs when I use my home PC (XP Pro) to access my office PC via NetMeeting. Previously with Win2k, I didn't have this problem from home PC.

NetMeeting has two ways of remotely controlling another Desktop. Which way are you using it.

With the Sharing method (shared desktop) you are still logged into NetMeeting and have access to File Sharing, Microphone and Video as well as controlling the remote machine.

The other method is Remote Desktop Sharing which can be started in NetMeeting. NetMeeting is then closed and you lose Video and Microphone contact but keep the Send File option from NetMeeting.

The second option is a lot less draining on resources and less prone to the type of actions you are seeing.

Which ever method you are using, open up Task Manager on both joined computers and look at the resources (CPU cycles) being used and see if they match your pauses.

There is a bit of information here which might interest you too.

I always use the 2nd methond - Remote Desktop Sharing (secure data only), no audio at all.

I will take a look at the thread779-768893.

Thanks,
