NetBIOS name - how to rename? 2

In Win98 I could modify Workgroup Name, Computer Name and Password for my LAN.
In XP I did it when I set up the LAN but now I can't find where they are so I can modify them. They do not appear in the Properties of my LAN in Network Connections.
I can set them in the Network Wizard if I want to set up a new LAN but I am just trying to modify my present one.

Hi,

Go to Start -> right click My Computer and choose properties and click on the Computer Name tab.

You can change it from there.

That's what I had originally thought - but when I tried to right click it nothing happened. I'm sure that function was available before but it isn't now. I've tried to change things in Start Menu / Customize/ Advanced /Start Menu Items / Display My Computer as Link (or Menu) but My Computer can never be right clicked.
Could this have been changed by a Win update?

What are you Right-clicking on? You should just Left-click on the button "Change" to see a box with your computer name in it ready for editing.

To rename a computer.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open System in Control Panel.
On the Computer Name tab, click Change.
Under Computer name, type a new name for the computer, and then click OK.

If I go to Control Panel / System / Computer Name I see the Change button. That works.

If I just click Start / right click My Computer nothing happens - no Properties, etc

You might have the My Computer icon on your desktop as a convenience and possible workaround to the Start button issues you are having.

right-click a blank area of the desktop, Properties, Desktop, Customize Desktop, and check the box to enable showing My Computer on your desktop.
