Hi all, Could use some help...
Running windows 2003 server and trying to get netbackup to run. We are using netbackup for a non proprietary server we store all of our data in. My understanding is this server can not be backed up with regualr backup software. Everything is set up and ready to go but when I initiate a backup job I getthe following error in the admin console and no backup runs...
:the specified client does not exist in an active policy within the configuration database.
Anyone have any ideas???

You are trying to do a "user directed" backup?
User initiated backup fails with Status Code 236

Exact Error Message
The specified client does not exist in an active policy within the configuration database(236).

Details:
When launching a user initiated backup, the job may fail with a Status 236. To illustrate this issue, and its resolution, the following logs and command line (CLI) excerpts are provided. The target policy is "servers" and the target client is "nbu2001."

Viewing the All Log Entries report will provide the error:

AllLogEntries:
1/12/2005 11:39:43 AM nbu2001 nbu2001 Info 5 Backup Status the specified client does not exist in an active policy within the configuration database
1/12/2005 11:39:43 AM nbu2001 nbu2001 Error 0 Backup backup by Administrator on client nbu2001: the specified client does not exist in an active policy within the configuration database

View Status in Backup, Archive and Restore and its corresponding log also show the error:

Path: \install_path\VERITAS\NetBackup\logs\user_ops\Admin000\logs\NBWIN001
11:39:42 1/12/2005: Backup Started
11:39:43 Initiating backup
11:39:44 INF - Backup by Administrator on client nbu2001: the specified client does not exist in an active policy within the configuration database.

Note: The status 236 is reported when the client does not exist in a policy.

How to verify if the client is in a policy:
a. Go to command prompt
b. Change directory (cd) to \install path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\admincmd
c. Execute: bppllist servers -U

Example output:

Policy Name: servers
Policy Type: MS-Windows-NT
Active: yes
Effective date: 01/11/2005 14:27:23
Backup network drvs: no
Collect TIR info: no
Mult. Data Streams: no
Client Encrypt: no
Checkpoint: no
Policy Priority: 0
Max Jobs/Policy: Unlimited
Disaster Recovery: 0
Residence: nbu2001-4mm
Volume Pool: NetBackup
Keyword: (none specified)
HW/OS/Client: PC Windows2000 win2k01 ***

*** Note, in this example, the HW/OS/Client field does not contain the client nbu2001.

Corrective Action:

1. Add the client to the policy. Please refer to the VERITAS NetBackup (tm) 5.0 System Administrator's Guide, Volume I for Windows for detailed instructions on policy creation and modification.

To verify if the client has been added, execute the same command:
a. Go to command prompt
b. Change directory (cd) to \install path>\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\admincmd
c. Execute: bppllist servers -U

Example output:

Policy Name: servers
Policy Type: MS-Windows-NT
Active: yes
Effective date: 01/11/2005 14:27:23
Backup network drvs: no
Collect TIR info: no
Mult. Data Streams: no
Client Encrypt: no
Checkpoint: no
Policy Priority: 0
Max Jobs/Policy: Unlimited
Disaster Recovery: 0
Residence: nbu2001-4mm
Volume Pool: NetBackup
Keyword: (none specified)
HW/OS/Client: PC Windows2000 win2k01
PC WindowsNET nbu2001 ***

*** Note that client nbu2001 has been added to the policy.
If all the requirements for user backup have been the satisfied, the user initiated backup of this client will not fail.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.
