can i (from the 2000 server) automaticly -once- install Windows Messenger (or whatever i need to install, i don't have Windows Messenger running yey i can msg myself) so i can "net send" to my users ?

secondly; i just tried "net session" and i do not see all users login, only 3 out of at least 5 that i know are logged in.

thanks in advance.

Net send is a command line utility. I believe it has 2 dependencies, it requires the Messenger & Alerter Services to be running. It has nothing to do with IM.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Correct, the messenger service needs to be on (which is defaulted "off" in XP SP2) in order to use the net send option, or similarly the "notify users" option when shutting down a server, etc.

thanks, started the messenger service on all pc's.. now should it possible for any pc on the domain to net send ? and is it possible for another pc not on the domain but in the same ip range to net send ?

if Messenger is Running, any machine can send it a message, assuming the port is open (IE: Not Firewalled, or allowed through your firewall).

Messenger takes any input from any machine, unauthenticated.
