Net Send to Win 98

Is there a way to net send messages to Win 98 machines that log into an NT domain workgroup?

Domain Workgroup, cute.
I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe all w9x clients need is the WinPopUp service running. If your clients have a habit of turining this service off, there may be a way to include a "net start" command in the login script. 9x does accept the Net Start command, but I don't know the name of the service, nor could i find it on my ME machine here...
Check out system policies too. "poledit.exe"

Thanx Anon,

The Workgroup was instituted before my time. I hsve to deal with it. Win popup and the startup would work. I wonder if I can move the net send "command" from an NT box to a 98 box? Hmmmmmmmmmm....

My understanding is only NT machines can use net send. Novell makes a program like winpopup but instead of wasting space on you taskbar you can send it to you system tray. You can run it on any Windows machine. I think it is called nwpopup or something similar.

Is it possible to do a "net send" thru IP over the internet ?? something like...net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx to any machine connected to internet...is that possible ? if not, what's the other way out to do that ?

To send message to win98 machines you must use a app on win98 machines called Winpopup.

Windows 98 machines dont come with the net send command.
If you try and send a message from an NT box to a win9x box using the net send command, the win9x user wont receive it. Only NT boxes which use the messenger service for the net send command will auto-receive the message.
To get a win9x machine to receive it, use the winpopup.exe program that comes standard with win95 and win98, and is located in the \windows directory.
To make the job of administration easier, add a line for win9x users in a logon script, to activate this app upon logon.

Yeah but then you can't send Net Send messages to random computers saying: "The MATRIX has you..."

I actually had this same question in a different thread. I tried to use the winpopup.exe program, but the application has limitations. It must be running in order for the message to be recieved.

Someone actually sent me a program that runs on win9x machines that functions exactly like the messenger service on NT.

Win 2k Pro is also able to accept / recieve net send. Always a little fun to send out a message to someone on our machine with the host name "ENFORCER".

Yes you can do a net send to an IP, but I'm not sure if it will travel beyond your subnet... never really tried >|o)

pls notice the TCP packet structure which made by "netsend" command..... it's SRC port is >1023, the destine port is 139. so, you can net send the message to anyone in the "Matrix" only if it opens its 139port.

can you change who the net send says its coming from on the fly (without having to change computer name and reboot) I tried changing a few registry keys, but didn't work...

It is not possbile to use net send over the internet because most of the servers have protection against it. Otherwise it could

yes...win2k is fun to muck around with. At some LAN events ive been to, most people had been using W2K and someone "net send"ed to the entire workgroup. Interrupted everyone's game! :-D

Another annoying thing to do is get access to someone's desktop over the network and spawn hundreds of empty text files on the desktop. Some people really do think thier computer is about to fail! ^_^

It is possible to use net send over the internet - I just recently did it between two computers connected to the same ISP (Cable). We had a common password and shares, don't know if that's why it worked.

Here is a program I wrote to watch when machines come and go and send them a message upon arival.

You can also use it to send messages and alter the name of the sender.

Send a message to your friend from 'The Boss' or Morphius or something like that.

i was recently on irc and over night i recieved a message from the name of the channel i was in, so it must be possible, the other bloke is most likeley 85% to be cable and i am 56k. Toatly differant isp companies

OK...I know that NET SEND does not work FROM a Win 98 machine...but is there any other program out there that will let you have the same function? I have a logon script set up that I would like notificitaion on when a user runs it.
