Need Win2K DNS Help

I have a Win2K, DNS/DHCP/HTTP/WINS/Exchange server. I THOUGHT I knew what the hell I was doing, but, alas, I was wrong.

Here is the problem;
If I ping "realhost.mydomain.com" I get a response, but it is resolving to my ext. IP.

If I ping "fakehostname.mydomain.com" I get the exact same response.

I would LIKE to have the machines that are currently on the network to use "hostname.city.mydomain.com", and get this via DHCP. However, that is not working correctly. Or, at least, if I try ping "realhost.city.mydomain.com" I still get the ext. IP.

What I WANT is;
DNS that will handle domain.com AND city.domain.com for internal OR external requests. I want DNS to properly use the DHCP functions for subdomains. And, I would like it to correctly resolve internal hosts via either "ping host" or "ping host.city.domain.com".

If SOMEONE can help me, I would truly appreciate it. If anyone needs any info, please let me know.

it seems to me ths DNS points to your domain public instead of the internal ip. check the DNS settings, for example using nslookup to troubeshoot it. For more information, go to

Well, first and foremost, your answer is at the extreme opposite end of the scale from what I would call informative. Being as that I am RELATIVELY familier with DNS, I have already verified that my DNS points to my internal IP. Beyond that, I don't really know what you mean by "check the DNS settings, for example using nslookup to troubeshoot it", and your comment "For more information, go to

is self-serving at best. Worse yet, your site is no more informative or useful as this site. In fact, in terms of being useful, it is EXTREMELY less so than this, or several other sites I have seen.

If you want to help someone, fine, help them. If you want to sell your services, list it in the phone book. You are no better than a slimey spammer...

Flaming responses to your post generally won't encourage too many people to help you, but I'll try. On your server open a command prompt and type nslookup and hit enter. Make sure that the default server is your internal dns server. Type set querytype=all and hit enter. Type yourdomain.com and hit enter. Please post the results.

The oxnard portion is SUPPOSED to be for the DHCP clients on this subnet...

Ok, the ping seems to be working correctly by host name. I'm not sure why it would default to your server when you have an invalid host. The problem with home.oxnard.thegillfamily.us should be able to be resolved by editing the host entry for your server in you Reverse Lookup zone.
Open a command prompt on your server and do a nslookup for charliebrown. Does it get resolved as charliebrown.thegillfamily.us or as charliebrown.oxnard.thegillfamily.us?

I think I've gone as far as I can with this. DNS appears to be working fine internally, but I dont have enough experience with subdomains to help you more with the problem. You may want to start a new thread asking how to setup a subdomain with dhcp and AD. I'm not sure whether you need a new domain in AD to get it to work or not. Just a note on your original question. You will want to use a seperate dns server for resolving external queries. It is possible to set up internal and external dns on one machine, but it does not work great and will give you a ton of headaches. I'm sorry I couldn't do more to help.
