Hi again,
This is a rather juvenile question, but I've never had to do this with Quark before. I am laying out a 100plus page catalog in Quark, and need to know the proper way to set up the document (via master pages, etc...all that stuff I'm not familiar with) so that it is ready for the printer. Right now I have the pages in order next to each other, one and two, three and four...etc., but I am thinking this won't fly with a professional printer, since the pages are in spreads, I think, and page one wouldn't necessarily be printing next to page two, rather it would be next to page 99 or something.
Perhaps the term for this is pagination? I am not sure. Apologies for the garbled explaination...it's confusing me and the Quark book I have isn't clearing things up. Any suggestions, comments...anything would be immensely appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
misirlou

It *can* get confusing. That was my least favorite part of putting together pubs for print when I worked for a newspaper. You may also need to check with your printer, because the layout may differ depending upon the size of your spreads and the size of the paper the catalog will be printed on. If I remember correctly, the pattern, with 100 pages, is like this for 2 page spreads:

1 100
99 2
3 98
97 4
5 96
95 6
7 94
93 8
9 92
91 10
11 90

and so on until the center spread:

50 51
(or whatever the center winds up being with 100 pages! ;) )

Keep in mind that if page 1 is a cover, it should be on a right hand page, with the back cover on the left... (picture a magazine cover/back cover pulled off and laid flat)

Back Cover -- Cover

Hope this helps... Matt

Thanks so much! I was thinking that was what I would have to do, but was kinda hoping there was an easier way that I just wasn't aware of...but again, thanks. It's my first job out of college and unfortunately, my school's design department was more focused on the aesthetic as opposed to the technical...this helps me a lot!

Matt:

I've been dumped with a project similar to misirlou, although a lot smaller. It's a 4-page folding spread 4 8 1/2 x 11 pages on tabloid.

How should I set up the Quark masterpage(s) and how do I set up the printing of pages 1-4 and 2-3 on the tabloid page?

I know little of Quark, (obviously)...

Another question is, is there a way to auto-number paragraphs (catalog items) in Quark? As in:

1. First Catalog item, blah blah blah

Descriptiion of First catalog item

2. Second Catalog item, blah blah blah

Descriptiion of Second catalog item
etc. etc.

Many thanks.

With four pages, you'd have:

4 1
2 3

You can always do your work with the pages with the pages laid out as you would see them after printed. My document layout window, when working on a document with multiple pages, would look like this:

1
2 3
4 5
6 7
8 [back cover]

I'd rearrange things once proofs were ok'd and all that jazz.

Not sure about your other questions KiwiRod. Setting up master pages is more or less like setting up any pages, except you only include things you want on every page. Perhaps I'm not sure what you're looking for...?
As for the 'graph numbering, I really don't know. Never did it myself. I'll check it out when I get home tonight, if you haven't gotten any more input by then...

Hope the other info helps... Matt

Matt:

Thanks for your help, but in my ignorance I'm missing something...

I have my 4 letter-sized pages:

1
2 3
4

In my document layout window, when I drag page 4 up to the top left and release the mouse button it just springs back to where it was. I'm missing a basic understanding, I think...

I guess <g> what I'm trying to say is that I don't get how to set both page-size and paper-size. My pages are portrait letter, the paper-size to take the spread of 2 pages is landscape tabloid...

Thanks, in the meantime I'll just hard number them. Four pages (20 items) is not too bad, but if this project goes up to 50 pages, as is likely, it won't work...

Thank you for your patience.

Rod

Your set up:
1
2 3
4
suggests that you may be working with facing pages, which would make it difficult to move page 4 up next to page 1. In addition, automatic numbering on master pages would then re-number your pages for you -- not a good thing. You may want to use a script to replace some arbitrary symbol (@ for example) with a hard-coded page number that will stay put as you move the pages around.

On a Mac, the entire AppleScript would look something like this:
Code:
tell application "QuarkXPress"
    tell document 1
repeat with i from 1 to (count pages)
          tell page i
set every text where it is "@" to i
          end tell
       end repeat
   end tell
end tell

If you're not on a Mac, I'm afraid I can't help with this part.

The character you choose to replace should be one not found in the copy -- if you have web email listings, for example, you would NOT want to use "@", but might want to use the British Pound Sterling "£" or something else instead.

A similar script would allow you to number your selected paragraphs quickly (assuming there are no UN-numbered paragraphs, in which case you would have to use some kind of test before applying your number. )

Hope this helps.

You really shouldn't have to set up yor document in printer spreads--your printer will do that when you send the discs to them, as part of their pre-press work. I've done dozens of catalogs & magazines (24, 48, 64 pages), & never once had to set up the printer spreads myself. Leave it in reader spreads (1 by itself--which is the front cover--then 2 & 3, 4 & 5, etc.) and you'll be fine.
