Need to run GHOST on Dell NT4 sp6 machine...

This is killing me. I have to ghost an image of my Dell laptop to the network, but I'm hopeless. How do I set up the boot disk (other than the files a 'sys a:' installs under '98)?

The system has 1 NTFS partition

The data is critical, and it has to be done ASAP.

Please, any help would be apreciated.

there is a floppy image on the Internet to boot and see NTFS partitions - but I can't recall where.

Can't you just ghost the whole partition to another partition on the disk - I have never tried ghosting an NTFS partition but it should be possible. Then boot to the network and copy the ghost over.

Does your dell have a docking station?
What network are you using?
Do you have ghost enterprise?

All our Dells (running NT sp 6) have docking stations with 3c90x NICs, and I use a dos boot disk with Novell network files (lsl, ipxodi and vlm) and ghost.exe to connect to the network. Map a drive to your image directory and then ghost to it.

I have not had much luck ghosting dell laptops without the dock - the nic pcmcia cards didn't "play" well with ghost. Otherwise Ghost enterprise seems to work very well.

What version of Ghost are you using?
If 6.5 you can use Ghost Boot Wizard to create network disks.Works very well.

Best thing to do is ghost to another partition, log onto the laptop and upload that image to your server. Then cut that image to CD.

We build all our laptops off CD (booted to by floppy) because connecting to the network is a pain in the rear with PCMCIA

Sysinternals has a utility called NTFSDOS that you'd need to read the NTFS partition to ghost it.

Unless you're ghosting to a network - you need to image your drives using FAT - or try using an NTFS DOS utility such as this...I have not tried it though.

Imaging to another partition or hard drive on your computer requires the use of FAT filesystems natively in Ghost.

Pbxman - I would like to correct you on that.

At my company, we image NTFS NT partitions using Ghost and Drive Image Pro with no problems. If, for example, we have a laptop with a C and D drive, we image the C drive to a file onto D. No problems at all.

When we are building images, we image up the NTFS partition to either an NT or NetWare server without any issues. When we build a PC, we image from the NT or NetWare server directly to the PC.

There is no need for any other utilities as the latest versions of Ghost and Drive Image Pro fully support NTFS partition imaging.

Lad - I stand corrected.

We don't use ghost very often, and when we do - we have version 5.1 which works with NT4, but does not support NTFS5 file systems with Windows 2000. ( I just popped in my network bootdisk to verify this).

I did notice however - when choosing Local "Image to Partition" or Local "Disk to Image"...the option to pick my other partition or hard drive is greyed-out.

We've long since lost the manuals for Ghost 5.1, but what you've explained is supposed to work. Am I missing something as well? The only location I can choose when imaging to another partition or disk is to use the A: drive, and create like 200 floppies!

We always image to our server, so Im curious as well to know what we're missing to image to another partition or disk locally.

Dunno about versions of Ghost (not used it for a while) but PowerQuest Drive Image Pro (also known as PQDI, which is cheaper to license than Ghost) works with v4 and v5.

Also, the SID changer in v4 of PQDI does have it's problems.
