Need to Replace a Win 2k Domain Controller 3

Hello,

Here's my situation:

I have an old win2k domain controller that is also my file & print, DNS, DHCP and Global catalog server and it needs to be replaced. I've alerady got the new server, installed win2k server with sp4 and installed all the security updates, I also already run DCPROMO on it and enabled DNS on it. The server seems to be working fine.

Here are my questions:

Can I use Veritas Backup Exec. to take the settings from my old server and restore them to the new server including the system state? and by doing this will my new server now become my everything server like the other one?

Or since the server already seems to be working fine and I already have a copy of AD on the server, can I just transfer the rolles to the new server and be done with it. If I decide to use this option, can I use the same DHCP scope created on the old server?

Please advise.

Just move the FSMO roles to the new server, install and authorize DHCP, create the scopes but don't activate. Then on your old DC, set the DHCP scope time to something short, like 4 hours. Then after the leases start to expire, deactivate the old scope and activate the new. One thing to keep in mind is if you have a multi-office setup, you will need to add the new DHCP server's IP address as a DHCP helper address in the router. Then run DCPROMO on the old box to demote it if you don't need it anymore. However, I would suggest you have at least 2 DC's for redundancy.

Your advice sounds like the easiest solution to my problem. I have another question though, is it possible to move the FSMO roles to the new server without taking the old server out of the network? the old server is my file and print server and I need time to move all the shares to the new server.

Yeah...no sweat at all, it's transparent to everyone. You can do it at anytime...Again, I highly recomend that you keep at least 2 DC's for redundancy.

when you move your shares, do it by backup and restore. That way you maintain the integrity of the current NTFS permissions. If you simply move them, you will end up with everything having the same permissions of the parent folder/drive you move it to.

Thanks for all the advice, my new server seems to be working great. I will buy 3 more servers as soon as the new year's budget kicks in.
skialta, I plan to make my future SQL server my second DC what do you think? the other 2 servers will be use for MS Exchange and Trendmicro's virus wall protection.

I dont know if I should start my own thread on this or not but it is in the same scenario.

I am doiong the same thing (Moving file server which is a DC, DHCP, DNS) but have my clients mapped to the shares - for example - F:\ is mapped to \\servername\sharename
I dont want to have to touch all the clients to remap to the new file server.

Should I use a logon script to map to the new file server? I was looking into Microsoft File server migration utility but it seems to be for NT servers to 2003 servers.

Any help would be appreciated and if I need to I'll start my own thread but I fifured I'd try here since its the same scenario

In you login script just do the following:

net use l: /d
net use l: \\newserver\share1
net use m: /d
net use m: \\newserver\share2

and so on.

When you are copying the data use robocopy with /SEC /SECFIX permissions to make sure all the NTFS permissions are copied from one server to the other.

I'd handle it with a login script, but would recommend that you not use the old batch file commands as was posted above and would instead suggest that you make use of the more powerful vbscript and include your script in a GPO.
