We upgraded to a new exchange 2003 mail server from another 5.5 box. I don't see the old server anywhere in AD, but when I try to license an email product it pulls up the old email server name from AD. Is there a way to seached for and delete an old server from AD?

Try this (hope you haven't already, dont wish to teach someone to suck eggs):

In Active Directory User And Computers, right click on the domain name at the top of the tree, select Find.

Change Find to Computers and then type in the name and search.

If it is in AD it should appear, when it does, right-click and delete.

It may be worth ensuring the name no longer exists in WINS and DNS.

Are you familiar with NTDSUTIL?

If a server was not demoted properly, I have seen it show up under this dos utility.

There is a way to remove it from there, but the only thing is, I have only done this from a W2K server, not 2K3.

Does anyone else know if this exists and works in 2K3

NTDSUTIL was what I was looking for, I just couldn't remember the name of the utility. Thanks guys!

Ooops. Not out of the woods yet. The box was a member server, not a domain controler so I can't find/delete it using NTDSUTIL. I tried finding it using ADSIEDIT but couldn't find it and there doesn't seem to be a "find" feature. What I need to do is to search AD for the server name and delete it. Any other ideas? (It's not in DNS or WINS).

Did you take a look and see if there was anything in the hosts or lmhosts files?

Yes, I did, but that's not where it's coming from. The object is in the Active Directory database. I'm licensing an email program and it looks into AD to get the OU and server information and it's pulling out the name of my old email server. Somewhere in AD is an old entry for this machine.
