I have a mailbox on my server that I need to regain access to and I'm weak on Exchange.

We're running Exchange 2000. I have a mailbox that I don't believe has been marked for deletion. The CEO wanted a brand new ID because he thought a fresh start was in order after TONS of offline folder, folder redirection, 3rd party folder synchronization issues from a couple of past admins. Very long story but neadless to say, he said make me a new "account" so I made him a new account.

I went in did an archive of everything in his mailbox before tomorrow (everything). Then disabled his current user ID and changed the account user logon name so that I could resuse what he's used to. I

I then right clicked on the ID and did Exchange Tasks and told it to remove all exchange properties (so i could reuse the email address currently associated with it). I did not delete his user ID and I don't think it ever asked me if I wanted to mark the mailbox for deletion. I think it's more of an orphaned mailbox with no account associated with it. Anyhow, how do I get his old user account, which is now ssmith1, so that it can access the mailbox and save off all the contacts on the server?

Thanks,

Josh

When you removed all Exchange properties, and orphaned the mailbox - you DID 'mark it for deletion'. If you right-click the 'Mailboxes' view in the store in Exchange System Mananager and choose 'Run Cleanup Agent', you should see a red X on his mailbox icon. You will need to right-click the mailbox and reconnect his old mailbox to the old account, be sure it's not disabled, and then just use ExMerge or Outlook to export the contents.

In some rare instances, if the 'new' account is the same name that the 'old' user, the legacyExchangeDN property will conflict and detect that the name is already in use with a new mailbox. In that case, you'd have to temporarily disconnect the new one, then reconnect the old mailbox to the new account to export the data. That can get messy.

Good luck!
