I've got a Cisco 2520 router with IOS version 11.2 and would like to upgrade it to 12.0 or higher enterprise edition.

I understand you need to be a vender, CCNP, CCIE and other requirements that I do not fit into this criteria.

I heard there is a site that you pay a small fee to be able to upgrade to any IOS for your router.

If anyone can help me get this upgrade or direct link would be extremely grateful.

Thanks for reading.

don't have to be a CCNP/CCIE to get it.. even then I don't beleive you get access.. you have to have a smartnet maintenance contract to get access.

Hello
What's the size of your flash and DRAM?
Regards

That was going to be my question. I thought those 2500s only had 8MB, which I'm not sure can handle 12.x

Yes, Smartnet now I recall. The little hamster in the wheel is starting to fall asleep as I'm trying to get back in the game. :)

thanks for the reminder.

My RAM & Flash are both 8mb in size and I have another 2520 router that has the same with 12.0 enterprise to be able to handle this version of the IOS.

Hi.

The 2500 series max memory/flash are 16MB and with that memory you can load 12.3, i have a few 2500 series router that i used for my ccna/ccnp labs running that IOS, about 12.4 i'm not sure but i think you can load it.

I don't think you can find smartnet for 2500 series, if you use google.com you will find some IOS for that series for free.

Hope this help.

Burtsbees,

I didn't know one was able to transfer the IOS between routers.

I would assume you need to use a crossover cable for the 2 routers.

Do you know the Command to transfer the 12.0 IOS on my 2520 to my 2511?

Hello
First you will need a TFTP server.Try googling for the keyword.Install it to a Workstation. You will first have to download the IOS to the TFTP server on the workstation.I will post a link shortly with the instuctions.
Regards

Yes---in other words, to expand on what Minue said, you don't persay transfer the IOS from one to another---you first upload it onto a PC or something via a TFTP server/service/daemon, then using the same service, you download it from the PC to the other router. Good luck.

You can also copy directly form one router to another (using an x-over cable between the two routers), without having to copy it over to a PC first... However, I'd agree with everyone else that you'd want a copy of that IOS on a PC anyways, just for the sake of backups.

sorry to jump on this trend but its very close to what im after , can anyone tell me if i can use two x 8Mb cisco 2511 flash memory sticks to enable me to place a 10 Mb image on the unit , i have installed both but i have a flash:1 and flash:2 both 8Mb each.

many thanks
Terry

dont worry guys solved it

cleared off all the images reloaded and copy a new image across sorted )

to serve from one router to the other you just need to add the following command in global config:

tftp-server flash:IMAGE_NAME

flash: can be interchanged with slot0: or disk1: etc depending on where the image is on your device... and IMAGE name is just the name of the ios.. probably case sensitive but ive never checked.

that will turn router a into a tftp server so that router b can download the image...

we do it all the time as its easier when doing mass upgrades around the world to put the ios in hub locations and then distribute from there...
tftp over high latency links is a real pain in the ass.
