Hi, great site
This is what happened: somehow the pc got ruined, I got the recovery cds from hp but they would format my pc (I had very important files), so I installed Windows XP Professional (I have original cds and license) on my pc but now I don't have the monitor installed. I can see images but I cannot reproduce videos. Also, when I drag a windows it does not go smoothly, it goes "jumpy". I went to the device manager but strangely "Monitors" does not appear. That is the strangest thing.
Please help me
Thanks in advance

(my monitor is a "hp pavilion mx70")

Ps: What I need help is getting "Monitors" to appear on the device manager.
Right click 'My PC'>Properties>Hardware>Device manager and you should see '[+]Monitors'.
That's what I don't have.
Help please

Also I have downloaded the only thing related to this monitor from the manufacturers page but all they are is "monitor definition files" (no good)

Thx!

Look first to your display adapter drivers. It is likely there is either an issue with them, or newer drivers are needed.

You can run "Driver Detetective" to determine if your existing drivers are current,
And use the HP site as well as the Windows Update site, Catalogue, to find missing driver files.

Have a look at Display Properties/ Settings/ Advanced/ Monitor - Anything listed there?

If there is a Properties button try updating the Driver for the monitor, if one is required. Is the Plug and Play service on Automatic and Started?

"Is the Plug and Play service on Automatic and Started?"
I do not know, how can I check?

Ummm....I think I know what I can do. What I need are drivers, maybe some vga ones.

Thanks for all your help but nothing works so far!

Help us to help you by giving the make and model of your system unit (not the monitor).

Run through the Video Display Troubleshooter.

307960 - Resources for Troubleshooting Display Problems in Windows XP

292460 - HOW TO: Troubleshoot the Video Adapter Driver in Safe Mode in Windows XP

In Device Manager, under View, show hidden devices.
Under Non-Plug and Play Drivers see if VgaSave has any problems.

Try your luck at HP.

Thanks for ALL your help. I went to intel.com and installed the chip-set drivers (the motherboard and stuff) and my integrated intel extreme video card drivers were installed, so now I can reproduce video!!! But the other problem persists, I can't seem to install my monitor.
It is an "hp pavilion mx70" )hp stands for Hewllet-Packard). When I drag windows and play videos they seem to 'skip'.

Have a look at Display Properties/ Settings/ Advanced/ Monitor - Anything listed there?

Is there a Monitor listed there as "Default Monitor"?
If so is the Properties button "greyed out"?

It may be that "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device".

What "Display Adapters" have you in this machine? Are they compatible and have XP drivers? Did you run the System Compatibility Checking program from the XP CD?

OEM XP and Retail XP's may be different in the drivers that are loaded or required for pre-installed devices. Have you upgraded from an OEM version to a Retail version of XP? Was it a clean install or an upgrade?

The only other thing I can think of is that you reduce the Acceleration setting, in Display Properties/ Settings/ Advanced/ Troubleshoot, a notch or two and see if this improves your video.

You could also try the Dxdiag tool.
