installing from win98se the xp installation tells me cdrom.in_ is missing. can I skip this file with no horrible aftereffects?

May not be any problem, it's not installed on my WinXP Pro 'clean' install.

maybe i wasn't clear enough. The system file for win98se called cdrom.in_ is missing from the system. Is this file necessary for clean upgrade to XP, and if so, how do i restore it?

let me try this again. There is no problem with the xp cd. The problem is in the system file missing from win98se. the file missing is cdrom.in_. it is NOT a problem with the XP cd, it is a problem with a missing system file on the machine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to restore this file?

Reading your second post, if you are doing a clean install, start it from the XP CD at boot up, not from Windows 98se. Use XP to delete existing partition and then to format it.

Read the paragraph,
"How to Partition and Format Your Hard Disk by Using Windows XP Setup."

This site is helpful too.
