We have a problem here with exchange. It seems we cannot connect to our exchange mailboxes in Outlook as soon as we shut down our fileserver. Our mailserver, running exchange is still running so I don't see how this would affect us being able to log in. The fileserver is the DHCP server and Primary Domain controller. The mailserver, also running ISA server, is our primary DNS server. I can't figure out why we can't shut down the fileserver without affecting the exchange mailserver. We can still see the mailserver on the network and can still connenct to it via terminal services. Just can't get email. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Jason Wetherill

Is your mail server part of the domain?? If it is,the mail server is using your fileserver(domain controller) to log users in for mail. Since their user accounts are on the domain controller and are not in the local security database on the mail server, as this doesn't exist if it is part of a domain. Hope this makes sense

The mailserver is in the same domain. It is also a Domain Controller in the same domain. It has the same AD Gobal Catalog as the fileserver.

Dropping a GC is bad. You can hardcode the DC / GC Exchange uses if you plan to do this often. Dan
