Need help with a GeForce2 Pro lockup on an HP system

I've had an HP system for awhile and decided to upgrade the video card. I had a 16 MB TNT. I got the 32 MB GeForce2 Pro and added it to my system. I had no problems with the vid card I had before. The new card will lock lock up the game every time in about 2-3 seconds. If I ctrl-alt-del, I get blue screened saying the system has become unstable. I have a PIII 450 with 384MB of RAM. The games run fine if I run them in software mode. Any suggestions?

Post back with what you've already tried, so we're not repetitive here. For example, did you install the drivers that came with the card? Did you completely remove the drivers from the old 16mb card first?

Also, the documentation that came with the card should talk about BIOS tweaks and how to troubleshoot basic problems such as this one...

I initially started with the drivers supplied with the card which were nothing more than the NVidia reference drivers. After that failed, I just did a full format/reinstall of windows to be sure there were no driver conflicts. The card in question is on IRQ 10 sharing only IRQ holding for PCI steering. The book is really scarce as far as bios settings and I have set what is available in the bios (there aren't a whole lot of bios features for video on this Mother board) based on tips from other websites.

It's a little more clear now, but I don't have any suggestions at the moment. So this is a PCI card then, correct? Post back with the type of motherboard, cpu, version of windows, etc., as these all can come into play. Offhand, I had a similar problem with a GeForce MX card and I had to update the BIOS and install the latest drivers for my motherboard chipset to get the darn thing to work. G/L!

Actually, this is an AGP card and I have emailed HP to find out what motherboard this computer has (have yet to hear from them). Also I have heard that a weak power supply could affect performance. I checked and it only has a 150 Watt power supply (plan to change that tomorrow). I am running Win ME and have updated the BIOS. cdogg, you from the KC area?

Tried a 300W power supply and had no luck Any other ideas?

The only other thing I can think of, assuming it works fine in software mode, is to make sure you have Direct X version 7 installed. If you didn't already have this version, upgrade Direct X and then reinstall the video card drivers.

One other possibility is that the BIOS settings are wrong. Make sure you consult the video card documentation for specific BIOS settings, or visit the manufacturer's website for more info.
