My brother won a couple of Intel Xeon processors:
604-pin
Speed: 2.4GHz
533MHz system bus
1MB L3 Cache
PROD CODE: BX80532KE2400ESL7D4
MM# 859259

I don't want them to go to waste so Im going to build a computer. What do I have to make sure matches when i select the motherboard? Is it just the socket? (604 pin)?

If the motherboard has an 800MHz FSB, does that mean my cpu will work in it? Or does the motherboards FSB have to match at 533?

What about the L2, and L3 cache sizes? I see some specs of motherboards say 1MB L2 cache but these chips only have 512Kb. Is it just saying the motherboard can support up to a 1MB L2 cache?? Or does it have to match at 512Kb.

Would the ASUS NCCH-DL board work with my cpu's?

Any other suggestions/tips?

Thanks

Hmmm...looking at those specs, one must wonder...do you really want to spend all that money on obsolete processors?

They sell for around $160 on eBay, so they are not that valuable. Their only value today is in the server market. Are you building a server?

If not I suggest spending your cash instead on a new Core 2 Duo and PCI-E mainboard.

These Xeons will work in a faster bus mobo but as you noted they have a low L2 cache, low FSB, and old .13 die so why bother? That Asus board will be at least $200 and you will not even have the option of PCI Express graphics. In a few years you won't be able to FIND a decent AGP8X card.

I say put the processors on eBay, that way they won't go to waste and neither will your cash. I do not think you will be happy building a new machine around an aging technology.

Best of luck!

I appreciate your comments but you didnt really answer any of the questions. I just want to know what needs to match and if that Asus board will work.

I do not need good graphics, nor do i need a "good" computer. These are "donated" processors so selling is not an option.

Yes, the Asus board will work.

Yes. All modern mobos that support your socket should work, but it is best to look at the motherboard mfr's site to determine processor compatibility. That Asus board requires ECC memory, which may or may not be more expensive. Good luck with your project.
