Need Help Restoring Public Store

Ok, I think I'm at a point of confusion here concerning restoring a public message store. Ok this is what I need to do: I need to retrieve data from a Public store backup from last week. The only server I can restore this on is the live exchange server. So my assumption was to do this: Wait til off hours, unmount the message stores, stop the IS, move the stores to a safe place, then restart the IS to force it to create a new database, then restore the backup onto that, retrieve what I need to PST, dismount the store, shutdown the IS, delete the restored version and move my live database back into place and then restart the IS.

Will this screw anything up? The situation is such that I have to restore this onto the same server, unless someone can give me a reasonable way to restore it to another server on my network. I know the data is in this backup from last week, I just need to get to it. I backed up with Veritas BackupEXEC 8.5. Thanks for any help.

I had the same issue a few weeks back, what i did was setup a bogus e2k server on a desktop PC, restored to that server and copied the data over. you just need to be sure to rename the pub store on the bogus server the same as it appears on the live server that your backup if from. one HUGE problem i had with this was replication between the two servers, once the restore finished exchange got confused and replicated the restored version of my pub database to the live server which was minus a weeks worth of data, be sure to check replication settings on folders in this situation.

I dont see why your single server method wouldnt work just as well, a little messy, but so is restoring exchange db's sometimes.

Good luck 01110000
