Need help disabling write protect for my Mainboard, updating bios.

I have a problem, whenever I go to update my Bios either from @Bios or just the good old fashioned way I get a 'write protect' error, the problem is I dont have any way in my bios to disable write protection, im losing hair here as I plan on upgrading my processor and really need to flash it.

Mainboard is a Gigabyte Ga-7vax.

I've tried both @bios and flashing it from a disk with no luck, could there be a jumper protecting the chips? I dont see any way I can pull this off...

Are you sure it not the floppy disk thats write protected?

No it was not the Disk that was write protected. but I didn't used the AutoEXEC that was with the bios update (was scared too so I used the AUTOEXEC from Make a MS-Dos Start up disk the first time) but that was the reason it would not let me update without it (when I did it the old fashion way) so when I tried it one more time and this time I used the AUTOEXEC with the Bios. and I didn't have to put in the command to tell it what to do it just got ready to update and it went easy from there on out. Sorry first time I did this and didn't really know how to Update the Bios. Now I do and everything seems to be running great now. thank you for your reply.

Hello Jumpfish! I have the same problem with my 7vax. I try the Qflash and other updating program that came with the motherboard for the BIOS but it still have BIOS write protection. I was reading your post but couldn't follow your instruction. Can you please list a step by step instruction on how to update 7vax BIOS? I really dont know what to do. I have an AMD2500+ Barton and its showing it as unknown CPU type. Please help. Thanks

here's what to do.

1, first get the bios updates from Giga-byte for your motherboard. (make sure it's the GA-7VAX motherboard). save to a place on your hard drive make sure they are in they're own folder (it's easier that way.)

2, get a Floppy disk and format it and make sure it's unlock and as nothing on it.(you need to format the disk anyway.) ok then right click on the A: Drive and choose format but don't format again instead check creat an MS-Dos startup disk.

3, then go into the folder you put your new bios into and extract it and then send it to the Floppy disk (it will ask you if you want to replace the AutoEXC say yes).

4, restart the computer and get ready to follow what it tells you to do, you should be able to follow every little thing (it as you what bios you want to upgrade to and everything. (it tell you how to in your book you got with your mother board "" please have one "" and the rest should be easy.

5, go into your bios (push delete) and go to restore defaults and then check to see if every other part of your bios is right (your Agp is set on 4X or 8X "" I don't know what your video card is). and then repeat twice (you got to do F4 and F10 "" I tried doing F9 but it would not let me).

ok I hope this works but I need to tell you there is a little problem with the whole thing. and that is make sure your Giga-byte GA-7VAX is either the new type (there are 3 types) if it's plain then make sure it's not GA-7VAX version 1.1 (it tell on the motherboard itself) you want GA-7VAX version 1.2 (remember if it's just plain the others are ok). why because it will mess up your computer,windows messing up for no reason, CD-R drive not working (slowing your computer down because it will not stop flashing). that is the problems I'm having and it's no fun (yes mine is Version 1.1 GA-7VAX plain and when I got it it was Dead "" Flashing it saved it and mess it up"&quot so if your motherboard is a GA-7Vax version 1.1 Plain. get a NForce 2Ultra 400 and everything should be fine plus it will work right out of the box and Giga-byte does have that type of Motherboard too. and remember I'm trying to help you out. there are a lot of people that got a Giga-byte 7VAX motherboard and some of them after fining out it was version 1.1 sent it back. (I got the motherboard on ebay, if you looking for a better place try newegg. they are the best.

Firt of all, thanks for the help. I checked my motherboard and it's version 1.1 So now, I'm scared to flash it. It's working ok now except its showing the unknown CPU type and it probably doesnt use the full capacity of the barton cpu. Thanks again

well,I was trying to warn you but the GA-7VAX motherboard does go all the way up to 3000+ if Flashed with F10 but you got to understand there is a small warning (if it's not broken don't fix it). but the 2500+ is not listed as a processor that works with the board (even though the rest are). and I don't know how happy you are Formating your computer and seeing if that fixes it. and really all I got in my computer now is a 1800+ procesor (I haven't upgraded let and don't know what I'm going to upgrade too). or even if I'm keeping this motherboard "" I really like this motherboard..I really do"" but when hearing all the other guys talk about this motherboard it scares me to keep it. and right now AMD is not winning the race against intel. and if AMD new 64bit Processor does great you would still need a new board. like I said there are too many decidions to make to know what is right and what is wrong. I'm sorry that I scared you but now you know where I come from on the subject...too many Question what is the answer????
