Hi,

I need help understanding a machine / nslookup / dns relationship. Here is my setup below

Server1 = W2K3 server running DNS as Domain123
WorkStation1 = W2K authenticated to Domain123
Computer1 = XP Home as part of workgroup Domain123

When i use nslookup to test the setup of my DNS server Computer1 has an issue. I'll list the responses below:

From Server1
nslookup Server1 = good return

From WorkStation1
nslookup Server1 = good return

From Computer1
nslookup Server1 = not found

From Computer1
nslookup Server1.Domain123.com. = good return

What I know of nslookup is that if you don't fully qualify the name you wish to query it will suffix you input with the machines domain name. Now on my Computer1 i have the workgroup listed as Domain123. Obviously that isn't working. Does anyone know how to view the fully qualified name of that XP home machine so I can see what its suffixing to my query?

Thanks much,
Donovan

I'm not so sure you can do what you want with XP-Home.
Anyway, do ipconfig /all from a DOS prompt .

workgroups and domains aren't interchangable from what I understand...

Have you checked the TCP/IP settings on the XPHome machine to make sure it has the proper domain suffix identified?

Good luck,

Yea I think that might be the direction I have to go. Maybe specifying the dns specific suffix. Seems odd that there isn't an easy way to see what its suffixing to the nslookup request. Maybe I'll try doing a little packet sniffing and see what that turnes up.

Thanks for the reply guys,
Donovan

You just gave me an idea! Now its always been that Computer1 has had a blank DNS specific suffix. To me it always seemed normal on XP home machines. But maybe, that's the issue. Maybe my nslookup request is no suffixing anything at all and is considering the machine name I request as "Server1." instead of "Server1.something.". Hmm...
