I need to set up a laptop with a "work" tcp/ip config of DHCP with internal dns #'s set statically and a second "home" with DHCP but with automatic DNS aquired from the dhcp server. Tried dual hardware config but both changed when I changed one. What is the easiest way for a client to change back and forth?

Set the default to DHCP configured.

Set the alternate to your home setting. Remove DHCP from your home setup.

When you goto work, it will see DHCP and pickup those settings.

When you get home, it will not find a DHCP server, and use its alternate settings, which are your home settings.

The "Alternate" configuration of XP is intended to be used where your default settings are DHCP, and the fallback settings are Static.

For a situation in which you have custom DHCP/DHCP, use the native Netsh.exe utility to create dump and restore files of your settings. This is very easy to use, and perfectly suitable for use in Desktop shortcuts. See the discussion by Daniel Petri:
