Gentlemen and maybe ladies,

Here is the issue I have tasked for me:

Manager says, "We need an extension that when our workers call in, they can enter "101" and leave a message saying who they are, where they work and why they arent going to be there that day. Is it possible without tying up a physical phone?"

My answer was, I think so. I know you can set up extension and their properties via the admin programming from a phone and Im sure there is a way to do the above but Im not sure if it is as easy as picking a nonused extension and setting it up. For one, how would you check its mailbox? Can you Feature 981 and then enter an extension to check it? Do you have to set up a tree to get it to forward to another existing mailbox?

Thanks for all input cause Im not sure where to start.

through f983 add a mailbox and when it asks you for mailbox number just put in any number that is not being used.

when you go through setting up the mailbox do not enter an extension number

when you login through f981 you will see it says other on the bottom

press other then login on one line "the mailbox number + 0000" 0000 is the default mbox password you will then have to create your own password and use that in the future.

then try and call that mailbox number and leave the message

i have never tried that so if it does not work i would suggest looking in programming for an extension that is unused then going back to programming for the mailbox and insert that extension for the mailbox extension.

make sure that the extension is set to forward to the vmail dn when not answered and that should definitely work.

you can check those messages the same way by pressing other after you press f981

Ok you beat me back to my PC, but yea i think you are right.

I just found out that to check our General Delivery, or any other mailbox for any EXT, you dial Feature 983 then hit *1040000 (where the * tells it you are going out to another mailbox and the 0000 is the default PW). So to check the VM, this is how to do it. If it is easy as setting up the VM for the EXT in the programming, this will be a cakewalk compared to how I thought it was gunna be.

Thanks again and Ill keep you posted if our findings are correct.

Yes in fact, setting up a VM in the F983 programming and assigning it an EXT made it work. Just dont forget to log into it a first time, change the PW and get a recorded name or if you call into it, it will tell you that you cant leave a message due to unsetup mailbox.

Oh and in the above post I made a mistake, its F981 for VM, not 983.

Its called a Guest Mailbox...you enter * as the ext number for guest mailboxes.
Normally most people would say make guest mailboxes start at 300.

Setting up the mailbox is called Initialization.

I think, Guest mailboxes have to be in a range that is not assigned as any a set B1 or B2.
Otherwise "you can't get there from here"
Nortel seems to have gone to a lot of trouble to keep messages from going to a mailbox without the set attached.

Guest mailboxes have been around since the original Startalk days! I have set them up in the past and they work fine as intended...

I agree, its all in the setup guide.
The only difference is you cannot intercom the MB # but you can get to it from F980, AA, reception F986 and able to check the messages from remote/aa and from any phone.

I useually use the example here faq799-3640 (the third one specifically) that lets you have an extension number be the same as a mailbox number without the need for using a station port.

Thanks to all who have contributed.

One last question, is there any way to have the messages time stamp themselves so when we check a message it gives us the date and time before it plays the message? I know it says it on the Display, just curious if there is a setting to do it that way too.

It's called the message envelope press 7 during or after listening to the message.

Thanks for that, is there any way to automate that to play before the message for every message?

Is there an easy way to check that? Fairly sure its a Call Pilot setup but considering nothing is labeled as such in the telco closet, Im basing this off some saved PDF's I have on a PC I took over.

Yup Call Pilot 31.10.14.22

Forgive me its early and Im not fully functional yet. Where should I go to change this. The option is not in Admin section when logged into the EXT's voicemail and the F983 MBOX section doesnt list it being in NVM or CP and Im not seeing any section with sub menus.
Thanks

There is a "Service Class" option of which all the mailboxes are set to "1". I tried changing it to 2 and 3 but still no dice. Is there a specific # to change this to?
