Need advice

If I wanted to write thr process section to read the data (it's a poem) and count the number of lines (including blanks) what's the shortest or best way to write it? I never programmed a line counter using a poem. Any suggestions?

I would need more information. What sort of file is the poem written on -- sequential or random-access? Or has it been entered online? How is the input formatted?
