tmCCNA's question about configuring a router with a PocketPC reminded me of my CCIE training...

I took a Cisco class at my local ExecuTrain branch a couple weeks ago, and the Internet connection failed so we couldn't access off-site routers.

We poked around the office and found a 2500, but no console cable and no AUI transciever for the Ethernet port.

So what did we do? I found a serial mouse, an RJ-45 connector, a crimp tool, and a multimeter. I cut the cable off at the mouse end, used the multimeter to figure which cables were TX RX and GND, then crimped on a connector.

Voila! A useable interface to the router!

This cable is now a permanent fixture in my toolkit.
