I am working in an enviroment where we use three tape drives to back up 500GB of data. We do a full backup once a week and difs nightly. The difs are about 120GB. We would like to goto a single solution for our backups. We are entertaining purchasing a NAS device and backing up to that. My question is how much storage do I need overall and what is a good strategy for implementing the NAS. For example should I keep a full on the NAS and move the difs to tape daily? That kind of thing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tony

Usually a File System Device will be created on the NAS box and the most latest backups kept there. It is up to you to run the numbers and see how much you want to keep on disk. Advantage is that it makes for a quick restore and reduces the backup time. Use Tapecopy.exe to copy the data to tape. If you are using the current version of ARCserve then you could use the schedular to run devmgr to do a tape copy from the FSD on the NAS box to tape, or tapecopy if you want to run it via command line.
