Right now we are doing a backup with the EMC Celerra datamover as a storage node using NDMP. We are using Networker 6.1.3 on a Solaris box. We have an L40 connected directly to the datamover with 2 DLT8000 drives in it. We are getting write speeds up to 8mb a sec.

We are putting 9940b drives in our Storagetek library and are considering using DDS to backup the data through the SAN. We are thinking this should pick up the write times to around 30mb/sec. (we have seen those speeds in backups to 9940s).

Will there be a problem using NDMP and backing up to the main library connected to the networker server using DDS (would we even have to use DDS?) and not using the storage node/remote devices?

To my knowledge this should work if you follow certain rules:
- Backups to a NW NDMP can be made if you install the NW
SnapImage NDMP Tape driver.
- Make sure that NDMP and non-NDMP backups will not be mixed on the same tape.
This would work in general but it has other caveats.
- Make sure that the block size is the same.

605, thank you very much for your reply but I am not sure I completely understand.

I can configure NDMP to backup the filesystem on the Celerra DART Datamover when I set up the datamover as a storage node. I used Legato docs to do it exactly how they specified. There is no tape driver on the DART operation system for the datamover.

What would I have to do to use DDS to back up the filesystem? Would I still have to use NDMP?

Yes, you are correct. You need to use NDMP if you want to use the Celerra as a Storage Node.

You need one NDMP Client Connection for each Datamover, and of course one DDS license for each tape drive you want to share. Unfortunately, the NDMP license for the EMC Celerra is quite expensive...

Delete the jukebox and use jbconfig to configure the jukebox again with multiple device paths and the Celerra device paths configured as NDMP devices. (The device names on the Celerra are similar to these names: c32t0l2, c32t0l3, etc.)

Remember to create a new pool for NDMP backups and don't mix non-NDMP backups on the same tapes.
Configure the "Storage node", "Backup command" and "Application Information" fields for the client. The Backup command" and "Application Information" must be configured according to the instructions in the Legato and EMC docs.

Make sure you have the "Configuring NDMP Backups With Celerra and Legato NetWorker" pdf from EMC. Ask your EMC representative to provide that document or feel free to contact me and I will email it to you.

Good luck!
