I don't know about you guys, but I beginning to get disgusted with Norton products. I updated my antivirus from 2002 to 2003 on an XP Home computer. I installed the software after uninstalling 2002 and closed down all other programs. After the installation and reboot, the program ran. But, after that one time, auto protect will not load upon subsequent reboots. I went into Norton's tech documents and ran through document 2002101608291506 titled "Auto Protect does not load after installing Norton Antivirus 2003 and then restarting the computer". None of the solutions worked.

I e-mailed Norton tech support and received a generic response suggesting I refer to the document I already mentioned in my request for tech support! Obviously, they've not improved their customer service.

Anyway, in the tech document they indicate that two files need to be in "services". When I went into "Services", I noticed that the files were not there. My assumption is that the files are not loading on startup. These two files (ccapp.exe and ccregvfy.exe) were easily located in "C:\program files\common files\symantec shared". If I manually launched each of the files after reboot, auto-protect ran correctly. My conclusion at this point is that all I need to do is to put these files into startup via putting a shortcut to these files in startup.

If this is a viable solution, is this simply done by moving the short cuts to the startup folder? If not, how is this done?

Thanks in advance for this rather simple question. "I kind of know how to move around in the dark, but I do bump into things"

Thanks,
Bob

The annoying thing about removal of Norton Antivirus is the poorly documented and still not fixed "bug" of leaving behind a dependency that causes DHCP not to start on a workstation.

The link I provided in point #2 above should be kept in mind by anyone having seemingly unresolvable DHCP issues with Windows 2k and XP. I routinely check to see if someone has run a "Trial" or other version of Norton Antivirus when faced with DHCP and loss of networking issues.

..."so I must be mistaken!! Shock"

Likely you were distracted trying to get MSN Messenger to work.

I would like to try to start with a clean slate. Several things need to be done:
1) The Norton1 and Norton2 entries in Services need to be removed.
2) If necessary, remove the Windows 2003 Resource Kit.
3) Uninstall NAV 2003 and the other versions that have folders listed as Symantec2.

I do not know how to remove Norton1 and Norton2 from services. I would appreciate some suggestions on how to do this.

I would also like to remove the Resource Kit. Do I just locate it and delete from Windows Explorer or does something else need to be done?

I already have the uninstall file suggested by bcastner. The registry entry suggested by bcastner needs some clarification. He states:

"The two Autoprotect files are not installed as service entries as Greg Palmer discussed above. The two entries exist as RUN keys in the Registry under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Just add two new entries, ccApp, and ccRegVfy, type REG_SZ, with the entries the full path and name of the respective .exe files."

If I understand bcastner, once I am in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER..............., do I just add another line and type:
REG_SZ C:\Documents and Settings..................\ccapp.exe

Please clarify if this is correct. Also, does anything else need to be done?

1. It is not necessary to remove the Win2003 resource kit, but you are free to delete the folder if you so choose.

2. "Type REG_SZ", in that it is not type DWORD or some other data type. Copy and paste the below as nav_fix.reg

********** begin copy/paste below
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ccApp"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccApp.exe\""
"ccRegVfy"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccRegVfy.exe\""

******** end copy/paste

If you double click the file you create from the copy/paste it will make the entries for you in the registry.

I'm sorry, but this is confusing. Here's what I think you are saying:
1) Go to 'run' and type 'REG_SZ'
2) Go to '[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]'
3) Paste the following exactly as indicated with quotation marks:
"ccApp"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccApp.exe\""
"ccRegVfy"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccRegVfy.exe\""

Also, you refer to nav_fix.reg. What is that?

Create a new text file on your desktop called nav_fix.reg

Copy the text above and paste it into this new file. Save the file. Double click it. The entire contents of the file should read:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ccApp"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccApp.exe\""
"ccRegVfy"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Symantec Shared\\ccRegVfy.exe\""

This file will make the registry entries you need automaticly.

bcastner,
I know this is like pulling teeth. Please bear with me. Only a few more questions:

1) Where is nav_fix.reg saved?
2) How is it lauched?

Bob

1. nav_fix.reg can be saved anywhere; it is only going to be used once.

2. It is launched by double-clicking the file in explorer, or if on the desktop, just by double-clicking. It will prompt you if it is okay to merge the file into the registry, to which you reply in the affirmative.

As you can see, all it does is to add the two NAV2003 executables to the RUN key. After rebooting, check your Msconfig results under Startup programs and you will see the entries as they should appear.
